About the workshop:
All levels welcome! Join me for a day of observational drawing and painting in the natural beauty and tranquility of Malabar Farm. I have scouted the location, and picked out some prime painting locations where we will be able to set up in the shade - always a consideration when painting in the hot summer months!
10am: We will meet in front of the Visitors Center for introductions, and go together to a painting location. Students will watch a painting demonstration, and I will talk about how I start my plein air oil painting, using raw or burnt umber as a thin underpainting. We will discuss the block-in method that I use to lay out the painting, thumbnail composition sketches and color studies. Students will select their subject and begin drawings or paintings.
1pm: We will take a 30 minute lunch break. Malabar Farm Visitors Center has restroom facitilies and various drinks and snacks for sale in their gift shop, should you need anything, but I recommend packing a lunch and bringing a water bottle.
1:30-4:30pm: Students will either continue working on the same piece, or select a second composition for the afternoon. Individual feedback will be given to each student.
Beginners are welcome! If you have never drawn or painted outdoors before, this is a great opportunity to learn about materials, plein air set-ups and more. Drawing in graphite or charcoal is strongly encouraged for beginners who do not have a plein air painting set-up yet. Registered students will be sent a suggested materials list.

Improve your drawing and painting skills by following the methods of Charles Bargue and the 19th century atelier tradition, or learn from master painters and draftsmen, by working on a master copy.
The primary focus of the curriculum is the practice and mastery of drawing skills, through copying the Bargue plates. However, there is plenty of time for individual feedback, so personalized projects and goals based on the interest, pace, and level of each student are welcome and encouraged. Subject matter ranges from figurative to landscape. Once a student has progressed through the more complex Bargues or equivalent copies, master drawings or paintings can be selected for copying.
Class size is limited to 4 students, allowing for plenty of time for questions and personal feedback.

All classes held at Whetstone Park of Roses, in Clintonville. First class meets at the picnic shelter closest to the main parking lot at the Park of Roses.
Make the outdoors your studio! Mary Jane will lead students in making observational drawings and paintings from nature at Columbus Whetstone Park of Roses. Students will gain experience with painting en plein air, which is the practice of painting in the outdoors, using the surrounding landscape as your subject. Whetstone Park offers a diverse range of landscapes to paint from, including the prairie, ravine, and rose garden. Demonstrations and personal feedback allow students to work and learn at their own pace. All levels welcome. Plein air students should have their own portable set-ups for painting.
If you are new to plein air, it is recommended to begin with drawing - as the materials are easier to set up. Find the full list of recommended supplies on the registration page, linked below!
